Sector Overview

The public sector is the largest employer within the education and teaching sector. The education sector can roughly be divided into the following areas: school education; further education and higher education. There are many and varied careers available within this sector and whilst teaching is clearly the most popular, opportunities also exist in finance and administration, educational psychology and at many levels in local education authorities.

For many teachers, their job is a vocation. Many work in education because it is a challenging but rewarding career which offers the chance to impart knowledge and life skills to children and young adults and in doing so have a hand in shaping the future of our country. This, coupled with the relative job security offered in the public sector, may explain why there has recently been a significant increase of people enquiring about entering the teaching profession. The current recession may well have increased the number of people who previously worked in the private sector who are now considering working in education and teaching. There are several ways to enter the teaching profession, including: specialist undergraduate degrees; postgraduate certificates of education; graduate teacher programmes; and school centred initial teacher training (SCITT). The Training and Development Agency offers detailed advice for those wishing to train as teachers.

The Education and Training sector offers careers opportunities at all levels throughout the United Kingdom.
