The Charity and Not for Profit sector, or Third Sector, is now the sector of choice for many people who wish to ‘put something back' and make a positive contribution to their community. Many experienced professionals have turned their backs on the corporate world in order to pursue fulfilling and rewarding careers in a sector that is gaining increasing prominence in the United Kingdom. The government defines this sector as "non-governmental organisations that are value driven and which principally reinvest their surpluses to further social, environmental or cultural objectives." These organisations include social enterprises, charities, community groups and cooperatives.
The opportunities for employment within the Charity and Not for Profit sector are numerous and include:
Fundraising.
Grants administration.
Human Resources.
Marketing.
Media/communications.
Administration.
Finance.
Management.
Almost all professions can be found working in this sector and for many people the most important aspect of their employment is the purpose of the organisation in which they work. From campaigning for elderly people's rights, through community recycling, to businesses offering constructive employment to people with learning difficulties, this sector gives prospective employees the chance to make a difference in an area they care about.
Many people begin working in this sector as a volunteer and choose to move into paid employment within the sector as opportunities arise.
