The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) is responsible for promoting Leisure and Tourism in the UK. Their aim is to "...improve the quality of life for all through cultural and sporting activities, support the pursuit of excellence, and champion the tourism, creative and leisure industries."
The role of the DCMS is vast and covers:
The licensing of pubs and clubs.
Funding the Arts.
Broadcasting.
Gambling and racing.
Preserving the historic environment of the UK.
The funding of museums and galleries.
UK Sport, including the 2012 Olympics.
The promotion of the UK as a tourist destination.
Essentially the DCMS is responsible for all Government policy within Leisure and Tourism and it aims to deliver these policies via 55 different public bodies which employ thousands of people across a wide range of disciplines. Some of the public bodies include:
The Olympic Delivery Authority which is co-ordinating the 2012 Olympics.
The National Lottery Commission which ensures that the National Lottery is run fairly.
Sport England which promotes sport to people of all ages and cultures.
Visit Britain which promotes UK tourism abroad.
At a local level councils have extensive leisure and tourism departments which promote healthy living, sport, the arts and culture in their local areas. As Leisure and Tourism become more important to the UK economy, local and regional councils have a responsibility to deliver services to residents and to promote their local area for the benefit of local leisure and tourism businesses.
