There are many options for those wishing to focus on working for the Highways and Transport arms of the public sector.
The Department of Transport (DfT) retains overall responsibility for delivering an integrated transport system which balances the requirements of the economy, the environment and society. The DfT works with regional, local and private sector partners to deliver its services and employs many civil servants in a wide range of roles, not least in the following executive agencies: the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency; the Driving Standards Agency; the Government Car and Dispatch Agency; the Highways Agency; the Maritime and Coastguard Agency; the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency; and the Vehicle Certification Agency.
The Highways Agency is responsible for managing, maintaining and improving the United Kingdom's network of motorways and important trunk roads, known as the ‘strategic road network'. As well as traffic officers, jobs at the Highways Agency also include technical advisors, transport planners, control centre operators and managers. A Graduate Leadership Development Scheme is also open to graduates.
County and local councils also hold significant responsibilities for highways and transport. County councils look after the repair and maintenance of many public roads as well as transport strategy and delivery. Councils also provide many transport services for vulnerable, sick and elderly people and also oversee local public transport provision.
