The National Probation Service (NPS) is a department of the Home Office and deals with the supervision of prisoners released on licence, offenders in the community and those awaiting trial in court.

The aim of the NPS is to:

• Protect the public from offenders.
• Work towards a reduction in re-offenders.
• Provide appropriate punishment to offenders.
• Ensure that offenders are aware of the impact of their crimes on the public.
• Rehabilitate offenders, both during and after their sentences.

From its head office, the National Probate Directorate in London, the NPS is responsible for over 40 probation areas in England and Wales and employs nearly 20,000 staff who supervise up to 200,000 offenders at any one time.

Jobs available within probation include:

• Probation Officers who work with offenders during sentence and on their release.
• Premises Managers who manage approved premises (bail hostels).
• Prison Officers who look after offenders whilst in custody.
• Forensic Psychologists who develop treatment programmes for offenders whilst they are in custody.

Most people working in probation will be subject to Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks prior to being employed.
