Social Care involves working with people to offer support and guidance to help them live their lives. An employee within Social Care could work with a variety of people with different needs and backgrounds, including children, the elderly, the mentally ill, homeless people or people with learning difficulties.
There are many different opportunities for a career in Social Care and some of these include:
Occupational therapist.
Psychotherapist.
Counsellor.
Family Mediator.
Care Home Assistant.
Childcare Inspector.
Social Worker Assistant.
Education Welfare Officer.
Defining the number of employees within Social Care is not an exact science as many professions have elements of Social Care within them but it is estimated that there are more than one million people employed within Social Care in the UK, around a third of which work in the public sector, mostly for local authorities with social responsibilities.
The General Social Care Council is responsible for registering and monitoring Social Care employees and their training. They issue Codes of Practice which must be adhered to by workers and employers within Social Care.
All Social Care employees will also need to pass a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check when they start work.
